Welcome to Create Play
The purpose of Create Play is to provide commentary on the gaming industry. The name came from this Wired article, where author Clive Thompson wrote:
"Games aren't like movies or TV. They might have narrative in them, but what defines them -- what makes them games -- is not a storyline. It's that they create play."
I fell in love with that line and thought it would be a great name for a Web site. Gaming is about creating the interaction. When you watch movies or listen to music you watch things played out for you. Unlike those mediums, you create the interaction and events that unfold on screen. That's the true beauty of games. While its more apparent in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the phrase even counts for abortions passed off as games like Big Rigs. It's a horrible game, but hey, you still create play. Whether the resulting play is enjoyable or not is debatable.
